A constant-pressure system should adjust pump speed as water demand changes. When the controller, pressure sensor, pump, tank, wiring, or plumbing develops a fault, the result may be weak pressure, surging flow, repeated alarms, a pump that will not start, or a pump that will not slow down.

Pressure rises and falls

A failing pressure sensor, unstable controller signal, restricted flow, undersized equipment, or pump problem may cause noticeable pressure swings.

Controller shows an alarm

Fault codes can point toward low voltage, overcurrent, dry-run protection, a sensor problem, lost communication, or another equipment-specific condition.

Pump does not respond to demand

The system may not start, may stay at one speed, or may run without reaching the pressure target when controls, wiring, plumbing, or the pump are not operating correctly.

Pressure drops with multiple fixtures

Pressure that seems normal at one faucet but fades during showers, laundry, or irrigation may involve pump capacity, well recovery, restrictions, or system settings.

Frequent resets

A system that repeatedly needs a power reset should be diagnosed rather than continually restarted. The stored fault history may help identify the cause.

No water after a power event

Storms, outages, and voltage changes can affect controllers and protective devices. Repeated breaker trips or exposed electrical components require qualified review.

Diagnosis before replacement

The controller is only one part of the pressure system.

Variable-frequency-drive and constant-pressure equipment uses feedback from a pressure sensor or transducer to change pump speed. A useful diagnosis separates a controller fault from a damaged sensor, loose connection, incorrect tank charge, plumbing leak, restricted filter, well-supply problem, or worn pump.

Replacing a controller without checking the rest of the system can leave the original pressure problem unresolved. Likewise, a controller alarm does not automatically mean the down-well pump has failed. The fault code, pressure readings, voltage conditions, pump behavior, and recent system history all matter.

  • The pressure transducer, sensor wiring, and pressure target
  • The small pressure tank, air charge, isolation valves, and plumbing connections
  • The submersible pump, motor cable, control wiring, and electrical supply
  • Filters, treatment equipment, leaks, check valves, and restrictions
  • Well recovery and actual flow available during high water demand
Electrical safety

Do not keep resetting a controller or breaker that repeatedly faults.

Leave energized covers closed and keep away from wet electrical equipment. If the breaker trips again, wiring appears damaged, the controller smells burned, or the pump runs without moving water, turn the system off when it is safe and request qualified review.
