Low or surging water pressure from a well system?

Weak pressure, pressure that fades during use, surging flow, air in the lines, and frequent pump cycling can come from the pressure tank, pump, switch, controller, filter, plumbing leaks, or the well supply. The pattern of the pressure loss helps narrow the request.

Low at every fixture

Whole-house pressure loss may involve the pump, tank, switch settings, clogged treatment equipment, main piping, well yield, or a significant leak.

Low at one fixture

A single weak faucet or shower is more likely to involve an aerator, cartridge, local shutoff, supply line, or branch-plumbing restriction.

Pressure fades during demand

Pressure that starts normally and falls during showers, laundry, or irrigation can point to pump output, filter restriction, well recovery, or system-sizing problems.

Tank, pump, or control?

Common sources of unstable well water pressure.

  • A waterlogged or incorrectly charged pressure tank can make the pump cycle rapidly.
  • A worn pump may run longer while producing less pressure or flow than before.
  • A pressure switch, sensor, gauge, or constant-pressure controller may start or stop the system incorrectly.
  • Clogged sediment filters or water-treatment equipment can restrict flow after the pressure tank.
  • Leaks, failing check valves, low well levels, or poor well recovery can prevent pressure from holding.
Call preparation

Describe the system and the pressure change.

Include whether the property uses a jet pump, submersible pump, or constant-pressure system; whether the problem affects the house, irrigation, or both; and whether the change followed a storm, power outage, plumbing repair, filter change, or heavy water use.

Pressure diagnosis priority

Measure static pressure, pressure under demand, and pump-cycle behavior.

One pressure reading is not enough to identify a weak-flow problem. Compare the gauge with no fixtures running, while one fixture is open, and during a higher demand such as irrigation. Note the pump's start and stop pressures, whether flow fades over time, and whether pressure improves after the pump rests.

Weak pressure can originate in pump output, pressure-tank performance, switch or sensor control, filters and treatment equipment, piping restrictions, leaks, check valves, or the well's available water. Testing the system in order prevents a pump replacement from being used to solve a restriction or control problem.

System pressure, pump output, tank, controls, main filters, piping, and source conditions should be reviewed.

Low at one fixture

A localized valve, aerator, cartridge, or branch-plumbing restriction may be more likely than a well-pump fault.

Pressure fades with time

Demand may exceed pump or well recovery, or a restriction, leak, failing pump, or controller limit may appear under sustained flow.
