An irrigation pump can run without moving enough water when it has lost prime, the suction line is pulling air, the check valve or foot valve is not holding, the impeller is worn or clogged, the well level is low, or a pipe is cracked. If the pump casing becomes unusually hot, the motor sounds strained, or no water reaches any zone, turn the system off. Continuing to run an unprimed pump can damage seals and internal components.
