Age and repeat failures
An older pump with repeated motor, control, or no-water failures may be less economical to repair than a reliable replacement. A recent pump with one failed control component may still be a repair candidate.
A pump that repeatedly leaves the property without water, trips a breaker, runs without reaching pressure, or needs frequent repairs may require a repair-versus-replacement review. The correct recommendation depends on the pump type, well conditions, controls, pressure system, water demand, and what failed.

Well depth, recovery, pipe size, pump setting, number of fixtures, irrigation demand, pressure settings, and electrical service all affect equipment selection.
A submersible pump operates inside the well and may require pulling the drop pipe, cable, and pump for inspection. A jet pump is usually above ground and relies on a sealed suction system that must hold prime. An irrigation pump may have different flow and pressure requirements than a household-water system. Identifying the existing setup prevents the request from being treated as the wrong type of job.
Do not keep resetting a breaker, open energized controls, or allow a pump to run without building pressure. Note the symptoms, shut the system down when it is safe to do so, and request qualified review.
A replacement decision should identify the failed component and confirm that controls, tank, wiring, piping, and the well itself can support the new pump. Motor current, insulation condition, pressure and flow performance, depth and access, repair history, and the condition of connected equipment all affect whether repair remains practical.
Sizing also matters. A pump must match the well's available yield, required lift, pressure range, household or irrigation demand, piping, controls, and electrical supply. Oversizing can increase cycling and stress; undersizing can leave pressure inadequate. Request the diagnosis and assumptions behind any proposed replacement.
A serviceable control, capacitor, switch, tank, leak, check valve, or accessible pump component may restore reliable operation.
Repeat motor or pump failures, poor performance, severe corrosion, inaccessible damage, or uneconomical repair can favor replacement.
Tank, controls, wiring, piping, valves, and protection settings may need correction so a new pump is not exposed to the same failure.
