Short cycling means the pump starts and stops more often than the system design should require. A failed or undersized pressure tank is common, but leaks, a clogged switch connection, incorrect air charge, pressure settings, low-flow controls, or a tank isolated by a valve can create similar behavior.
Record how many seconds the pump runs, the gauge pressure at startup and shutdown, and whether cycling occurs with one small fixture or only during irrigation. Frequent starts generate heat and mechanical wear in motors, relays, switches, and pump components, so the cause should be corrected rather than masked with wider pressure settings.
Limited tank drawdown, a waterlogged tank, or pressure-control issue may cause an immediate start for each small use.
Pump output, demand, tank storage, switch range, and any cycling-control device must be considered together.
Chattering may involve unstable pressure sensing, restricted ports, loose electrical connections, or controller faults.
Instead of saying the pump runs often, record the approximate run time, rest time, gauge pressure at each switch point, and which fixture was open. Also state the tank model or size if readable. These measurements help distinguish insufficient drawdown from a system leak, unusual demand, switch-sensing issue, or specialized cycling-control setup.
